Where do I come from?
Missouri to Singapore to London, to Singapore to London. Then Singapore again, now back in London. HAHA.
I was born – in a kitchen – in Columbia, Missouri. Only the beginning of a far from usual childhood. Gardening, animals, building, kayaking, hiking, shooting guns, bicycling, I could go on…
Given my family has always been was spread out around the world, and I hail from Romanian and Ukrainian Jewish immigrants, I was always apprehensive to venture out of the Midwest. I became more and more interested in travel, and exploring beyond my small-town community in my teenage years.
At sixteen I moved to Singapore to live with my aunt and uncle. My experiences there bore little resemblance to those in Missouri, but that is not to say one set was better than the other. For the time being, I am adamantly against returning to the United States, so my university studies have brought me to London.
Without sounding too much like a college application, where I come from actually contributes quite a lot to who I have become, especially recently. I had always wanted to move away from the Midwest, but had no idea what it meant to uproot yourself from a hometown and move across the globe. That initial move doesn’t define who I am as a person, but it validated my eagerness to take on the world at an impressionable age. The independence I was subjected to before becoming an official adult did great things to my mindset and perspective. Advice? Stay curious, stay adaptable, and stay appreciative.
