Repurposing urban structures to house climate refugees.
MODHAUS
Climate refugees are individuals who have lost their homes and livelihood due to natural disasters. Despite being classified as refugees, no international entities exist to oversee their managed retreat and relocation after a major flood, for example. Existing solutions for refugees, such as tents or prefabricated housing, lack sustainability, longevity, quality, and most importantly for MODHAUS: personalisation.
The MODHAUS ecosystem is a solution for local governments – piloted first in the UK – to provide modular and personliased housing for climate refugees, built in repurposed urban spaces. Climate refugees design their own home in a VR environment and MODHAUS 3D prints and assembles the homes in the respective community. AI is enlisted for architectural synthesis in styles and optimisation of floor plan design. Smart and kinetic architecture provides maximum use of space within the smaller homes. MODHAUS is the future for climate refugees in a world with rising sea levels. We design with the user in mind, believing truthfully that house follows household.
Our group spent the term developing MODHAUS and proposing a solution for climate refugees specific to the UK. This is what we came up with:
