Why on Earth do people think Imperial is so Dead?

People party. People socialize. People are well-rounded and multi-dimensional

COVID aside, I didn’t have high hopes for Fresher’s week at Imperial in the typical go-out-every-night-and-get-wasted sense that usually goes down at all the other Unis in London. As I am sure many other prospective Imperial students have done, I scoured YouTube and Reddit for information before coming to campus, and there’s such a negative stigma that exists! Imperial is a dead uni. People here have no social life (or social skills). You come to Imperial to study, full stop.

I happily report that this is false. I haven’t met a single person that is one dimensional. In fact, people here are inspiring. They are extremely intelligent, and dedicated at a young age to their success. They have focus and talent, but are also curious and ready to learn as much as they can. Of course, there will always be people who are more close-minded than others, or have more to prove, and everyone is ignorant of what they don’t know, but complacency, stinginess, or belittling attitudes, these I have yet to experience.

Just because Imperial is a STEM university doesn’t mean that the community isn’t highly attuned to what is going on in the world of politics, culture, and in the softer sciences. Also, what the student body studies doesn’t seem to damper its desire to socialize and have fun. In fact, being an Imperial student doesn’t mean you don’t enjoy life, it just means to know how to handle yourself; you have to learn to fit everything in, prioritize, organize, and come at everything before it comes at you.
